Name ideas

Page history last edited by Michael Hiemstra 6 mos ago

The most current naming progress is happening over at http://makekw.org/hackerspace/names

This hackerspace is in its infancy. Here are some potential names:

Also check the forum and see the Naming discussion board.

Watspace

The GigaWAT Shop (or "GigaWAT Labs" as a variation)

hackw  ...note: I registered hackw.net a while ago for the express purpose of a hackerspace in KW (wmat)

The Alterspace (.com .net .org and .ca domains available currently!) with The AltSpace as a variation

Druthersspace or Druthersplace (lookup meaning for "druthers")

Membrain Labs... read as "member brain", also recall that a membrane often connects two distinct spaces, allowing substances to flow between (e.g. ideas)

... or Studio Membrain or Membrain Studios

BlackflyLabs... I thought this name had a distinctly Canadian ring to it.  (wmat)

New Wardenclyffe Labs (NWL)....this is in tribute to Tesla's Wardenclyffe Lab Site where he attempted to make power travel through air. (wmat)

The Carriage House...in tribute to Alexander Graham Bell's workshop on his Brantford, ON property. (wmat)

Kitchener Waterloo Community Lab (Daniel A)

Hack-Omega (we already have hackw.net, why not? -Nick G)

hacKWspace, hacKWare, hacKWorks, HacKWorks Lab (Daniel A)

          Diyode

          Sudo Make

          whack

          hacknation

          hackerloo

          Electrohack

8Tables....  a name describing the 8 tables we assembled around at Williams's at the inauguaral meeting.  I thoungt we could also include a subtitle when applicable such as 8Tables: K/W Hackerspace or 8Tables: A Maker Collective. (wmat)

Hackberry Labs.  I'm imagining a tasteful sillhouetted tree logo.

Warranty Voiding Society of KW : ripped off from Richard Weait's "I Void Warranties"  T-Shirt.

     Alternative:  KW  Warranty Voider Guild

The Creatorium : Morbid connotations, but I  can't get this one out of my head.

KW Artisan Asylum : Variations on the refuge theme include:

               KW Wild Inventor Game Preserve

               KW Creator Sanctuary

          KW MakeTank

          The Creator Commons (of KW?)

(I know I may have made the naming problem worse. Sorry. In my defence none of these names are "funder friendly" - Paul N.)

Any other ideas?

Are acronyms cool these days?
hackw -> "Hacker and Artist (Collective|Community|Co-operative|Company|Corporation) of Kitchener-Waterloo"

I do like any name of the form "Wat*", since UW doesn't seem to be using those much anymore. Although anything like WatCom might make some people think of C compilers...

My only complaint about he "Wat" prefix is that it historically aligns whatever it is to UW. Not that this is bad, but it's a little misleading.

Yeah... that was my first impression too. The GigaWAT reminds me of the "1.21 Gigawatts" line from Back to the Future. Classic.

After ruminating on names since this all started, Michael's "GigaWat" has really grown on me. I think given that Michael lit the spark that started this effort, perhaps we could simply choose his suggested name. It's short, easy to say, regional, and pays historical homage to the use of Wat in many technical efforts seeded in thei region, such as teh Watcom C/C++ compilers.

I'm partial to "KW Warranty Voider Guild". Wat* sounds tacky.

a word from a crafter/artist... if you want artists, not just tech-geeks (no harm intended) then you would be best to incorporate "make" into your name. not saying we aren't brilliant as artists, but if the title is out of my area of skills (something only computer hackers would know) then i would steer clear of the group. no one wants to feel insignificant in a group/collective

what about something that shows a combination of the two. art + tech...

or MAKE:space (allows the concept of anything can be made)
make:collective...

you get it (i like "make")
